Based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, an 18th century mixed-race heiress, growing up in a predominantly white-based society.
Directed by Amma Asante and produced by Damian Jones comes the story of a young girl in a very powerful position. Dido played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is the mixed-race daughter of an African slave and British Naval officer. Due to the tragic death of her mother, Dido is under the care of her father and respective guardians (Earl of Mansfield), who raise her in aristocratic London. The story is based on her hierarchy and social growth upon London's upper class community, however difficulty arises when she falls in love with a young budding lawyer. Her family are torn apart and everyone's views of equality and mixed race comes to blows, as Dido herself goes on a story of self-discovery.
The film was shot on location in the Isle of Man, Oxford and London. Such is the credibility of the movies it has been selected to appear in the famous Toronto Film Festival.
