Having reigned through six decades of enormous social change and development, millions of people lined the streets of London and the river Thames to watch and celebrate with the Queen and family this very special weekend – Her Diamond Jubilee.
Accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen attended the Derby at Epsom Racecourse on Saturday. Together with other members of the royal family as well as friends it was a wonderful day culminating with her presenting the owners of St Nicholas Abbey with the Coronation Cup.
With Sunday came one of the public highlights. With parties and ‘Lunches’ up and down the country the ‘Big Lunch’ initiative encouraged and helped communities become closer. Roads were closed and shop supplies exhausted as families and neighbours came together to share celebratory drinks and lunch.
The afternoon brought the incredible spectacle that was the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. With around 1,000 boats taking part from across the UK, commonwealth and around the world, millions watched as the flotilla headed up the Thames, with the Royal Barge taking centre stage. Decorated in traditional royal colours, the Barge docked and the Queen together with the Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and other members of the royal family stood firm in the strong winds and rain and waved in support as the other boats went by.
A truly spectacular and memorable day for the whole country.
